Advanced Power BI, Semantic Modeling & Analytics Architecture

3 Days

Description

KT‑401 is an advanced analytics architecture course designed for Business Intelligence Developers / Architects working in Microsoft Fabric environments. This course builds on existing Power BI (PL‑300‑level) knowledge and focuses on semantic modeling, analytics architecture, performance optimization, and governance at scale.

This course does not result in a PL‑300 certification and does not repeat introductory Power BI analyst training. Instead, it develops the architectural and design competencies required to support enterprise‑grade analytics solutions and prepares learners for advanced Fabric analytics engineering work (DP‑600).

Intended Audience

  • Business Intelligence Developer / Architect
  • Analytics Engineer
  • Experienced Power BI practitioners transitioning to Fabric‑centric analytics architectures

Learning Objectives

By completing KT‑401, participants will be able to:

  • Design and manage enterprise semantic models in Microsoft Fabric
  • Apply star schema and DirectLake modeling strategies
  • Optimize analytics performance using advanced DAX patterns
  • Implement governance, deployment, and lifecycle strategies for BI solutions
  • Align analytics architecture with business requirements and platform constraints

Course Overview

Detailed Course Outline

Module 1: Semantic Models as an Analytics Contract

  • Role of semantic models in modern BI architectures
  • Star schema vs snowflake schema (architectural tradeoffs)
  • Designing reusable, governed models
  • DirectLake impacts on model design

Module 2: DirectLake, Import, and Composite Models

  • Choosing storage modes for scalability and performance
  • DirectLake behavior and limitations
  • Hybrid scenarios and performance implications
  • Avoiding common architectural anti‑patterns

Module 3: Advanced DAX for Architectural Scenarios

  • Measure vs calculation strategy
  • Filter and row context optimization
  • Performance‑aware DAX patterns
  • Understanding calculation tradeoffs in large models

Module 4: Model Governance & Lifecycle Management

  • Workspace strategies and separation of concerns
  • Deployment pipelines for BI assets
  • Version control and controlled change management
  • Supporting multi‑consumer analytics environments

Module 5: Supporting Enterprise Analytics at Scale

  • Designing models for multiple reports and teams
  • Performance testing and validation strategies
  • Collaboration with data engineering and platform roles
  • Positioning BI development within Fabric workloads

Outcome

Participants leave KT‑401 with the skills required to architect, optimize, and govern Power BI and Fabric semantic models capabilities that go well beyond PL‑300 training and directly reinforce DP‑600 success.
